Henk Mak Being an artist was not my first choice in life. I started working life as a interior designer basically sketching and designing comfortable homes and houses with textiles and designer furniture. Names like Corbusier, Charles Eames, Verner Panton, Arne Jackopson were some of the inspirators.
Traveling the Island of Java in 1972 in Indonesia I got totally inspired with the batik textile designs and technique and made the choice to work with it.
In 1984 new silk paints came on to the market, and I changed from purely batik/wax technique to painting/aquarel technique on silk instead of cotton. Silk is called the queen of textiles and for a good reason. The colors are far more inspiring then any medium in the arts. The deep colors of silk are a great source of inspiration: nature and meditating on life the keystones that give me the full enjoyment working all these years.
